Self-Portrait + Thoughts

Medium: Pencil. watercolor, ink, soft pastel, and colored pencil
This piece, titled “Self Portrait + Thoughts”, displays the interaction between emotions and algorithms that occur as a part of my thought process. I am an algorithmic person, shown through the gears and lines coming out of the head and running across each other above. But, viewing the singular aspect of algorithms would prevent from viewing the whole picture. As shown by the hint of a smile and the splashes of color interacting with the lines, innovation requires emotion. When innovating, my thoughts move fast, jumping from one idea to another. Through this piece, I wanted to take some time to recognize the strong connection between emotion and logic and the complexity of these ideas that occur behind the delighted look on my face that accompanies my process of innovating.
Realities

Medium: Watercolor, ink, soft pastel, and colored pencil
This piece, titled “Realities”, explores the contrast between illusion and reality. When the illusion of perfection, as shown by the colorful glasses, is removed, all that remains is a mark of what used to be: colorless and lifeless buildings. I want to show that it is important that one remains true to themselves, that covering up with layers of perceived “perfection” only distracts us from seeing a reality worth viewing. I included reflections of color skidding among the bottoms of the buildings and the glass panes of the cars to show our distorted ideas of perfection with an ever-present chaotic entropy.
Corner Office

Medium: Colored pencil, charcoal, and acrylic paint
Of the Fortune 500, the top corporations, only 41 are run by women. Women still face gender-based inequalities at work including unequal pay and limited growth opportunities. This piece represents that inequality through the corner office, a representation of higher positions in a company. The corner office is still not given to women and is symbolized by the red high heel breaking into the office. As the only sign of color, the high heel represents the limitation of women in higher leading positions. The splitting ground behind the heels show the impact of the hard work women go through to receive the position. The strong and solid shadow of the window frames are broken showing that the women are breaking through the misconception that they’d like to continue living within the shadow of their superiors. The view outside the corner office is colorless because the reward of a corner office is overpowered by the impact of the woman’s entrance into a higher position.
Instincts

Medium: Colored pencil and cotton
As humans, we often describe ourselves as the top of the food chain, using our cognitive abilities to look down on other species of animals. However, this piece shows that underneath, we are all the same. When stripped down to means of survival, there is almost no difference because humans are after all, animals as well. This is shown by the fierce look shared by the woman and the tiger. The perceived difference between humans and animals is shown through the rip in the paper between the woman and the tiger. However, the true shared instinct is shown through the green paper underneath the rip. The green eyes shared by the women and tiger and the green tints in the woman and tiger’s hair show their underlying shared traits. This is also shown through the way the woman and tiger blend together underneath the point where the rip stops.
Music is an Universal Language

Medium: Newspaper, ink, watercolor, acrylic, and clay
Through this piece, I wanted to display the cultures and ideas within the U.S. Music is considered an universal language and this piece uses music as a representation of a shared experience. The U.S. is known as a melting pot of cultures, however there are still differences between cultures that can lead to conflict or growth. The tangled black and white lines running in front of the woman represent the conflicts that arise as a result of cultural beliefs or ideas clashing. However, the colors represent the splashes of emotion and beauty that arises as cultures peacefully coexist and learn from one another. This integration of cultures is further emphasized by the contrast between the woman’s headphones bearing the American flag and the Chinese newspaper behind her. The woman looks onto the clashing lines in apathy. But music, the universal language, provides a gateway to the coexistence of various cultures as represented by the color splashes on her head behind the headphones.
Research

Medium: Acrylic Paint and ink
This piece represents the field typically viewed as completely scientific: medicine. The clothes of the doctor and nurse show that they are not the cold, solid, purely-scientific people they are perceived as. The clothing colors show hints of warmth and emotions involved in their work symbolizing their witness to birth, death, and everything in between. The cool colors (logic) of the room and contrasted by the splashes of warm colors (emotions) beyond the window. The goggles they wear are HoloLens, a mixed-reality goggles that overlay augmented-reality objects onto real life environments. I’ve conducted research with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) using these HoloLens to display 3D models of scientific data such as patient organs and interactions between molecules. Scientists, clinicians, and patients greatly benefit from these innovations. The floating holograms of a patient’s head and the detailed work of the spine show the ability for scientists to use these for study before operating on the patient lying below. The same colors and emotions are reflected in the surfaces of these holograms.
Survival

Medium: Acrylic paint, masks, tree branches, and plastic
With the rise of the pandemic, the meaning of masks have begun to change. What was previously seen as a protective measure only for those with severe illnesses has now become a symbol of protection for all. In fact, as the pandemic progresses further, these masks have become stifling from some. In a similar way to our need for protection from the virus, this piece represents the environment’s need for protection from us. The masks covered with grass represent an attempt to protect against the damage the environment faces from the pollution and harm some human activities create. The impact of this pollution is further shown by the decreasing 3D representation of the trees. From a blossoming tree with flowers and branches protruding from the canvas on the right to the impression of a tree flat with paint on the left, the environment continues to wither under the stifling protection of the masks.
Changing Beauty

Medium: Acrylic paint and magazine
In this replica of Claude Monet’s painting, I wanted to show the changing perceptions of beauty. In the original Woman in the Garden, a young woman in a Victorian dress stands towards the left of the painting and looks ahead into the garden. However, in my version, the young lady is replaced by a modern woman in a pantsuit and high heels walking through the garden with a purse in hand. The lady represents the change in perception over time. When the painting was originally created, these pieces of artwork and the style (Victorian dresses) were described as beautiful. However, as time progressed this perception has changed as represented by the modern standard of beauty. The modern woman’s beauty is more materialistic with her style of dressing and the purse she carries, which pulls attention away from the garden. This is represented by the “blurry” nature of the brush strokes in the background which differs from the small and thin brush strokes in the original painting.
